Hello Eric
say what you need if it fails, I don't think only you will be able to help them.

Thanks for doing this project.

If the math department is not interested in this project (no researcher who wants to do it), does your old supervisor have contacts to those who are interested in this?

for the batch plan:
I would really like to see sf3 finished, is it possible to make it GPU only and start to feed it to us?
we could calculate sf7 and sf3 side by side, other on CPU and other on GPU.

Definitely try to finish sf3 and sf7 with 100% because then we can say it is done and results are here. so, please don't start sf6 before those are done.

It is not possible for the app to distinguish between subfields. The only way would be to create a different app for one of the subfields and then only enable the GPU platforms for it. A lot of work for little benefit. Have patience... we will be back to sf3 early next year.

I am an alumnus of ASU. I think maybe we can try to reach out to the university foundation to see if they can setup a donation page for this project. Another option would be cloud computing. Some alternative cloud providers like Linode may have a cheaper price than AWS or Azure. I (will be come soon) am a software engineer, and I am familiar with cloud computing technologies. Can you list the hardware/network requirements of this project so we can start calculating how much would be required to maintain it?

Hardware is not a problem, I could even use one of my older systems, maybe with an upgraded network card. But to answer your question, one would need the equivalent of a Xeon class processor, an SSD, and a fast network connection.

The bottleneck is the network connection. During the pentathlon earlier this year, the server was processing 400k tasks per day (>16000 file transfers per hour), and the network bandwidth was starting to hit its limit (not sure if it was the connection speed or the ethernet card). So that would be my biggest concern hosting the project somewhere else.

Then I think have a GoFundMe page for the network cost seems a good idea for the project. I am willing to contribute a part of it periodically to support the project. Thank you so much for creating and continue maintenance this project.

The plan is to do DS16x10 and DS16x11, and then back to finish off sf3.

It is interesting what is the bandwidth should internet have in order this project works properly?
Is it enough 100 MB/s (I have such internet at my home).
Or it needs 1 GB/s or greater?

It's hard to say, but the more the better. When there is a period of heavy usage, such as during a competition, is when you will have problems.

Also, remember it's important for projects to have a fast upload speed. My ISP gives a pretty fast download speed, but the upload is only ~10MB/s. To get more, they want me to purchase a "business" account and pay through the nose.

Have you considered to rent a dedicated server. For Example Hetzner Auction offeres good price/performace offerings
If taking cheapest server with XEON processor avalable, 32 GB RAM and 10 TB HDD (RAID), the price is 62 dollars + VAT per month.
https://www.hetzner.com/sb?drives_size_from=10000&drives_size_to=16000
For this price you get unlimited traffic, with 1 Gbps uplink.
Several years ago I was renting 1-2 servers from them to run BOINC projects, mainly primegrid and it was great service quality. One time PSU failed and it got replaced in 1 day with no additional cost.

Sure this idea still needs a monthly donation, but if monthly price would be 1 dollar or more (if anyone wants), I think there will be plenty of people who can donate that sum each month (me counted in :) ).

That's another option if/when the current server dies.

I think it's best not to wait when the current server dies.

Yes.
Why not use the public server gerasim.boinc.ru ?
(you can upload tasks to the server and receive the results calculated by the participants).

@Eric:
If you are interested, I will tell you how to do it.
Best regards, SerVal (gerasim.boinc.ru admin).

@SerVal:
I thought gerasim was a stand alone project. I am interested to learn more. I will respond to your pm so we can discuss offline.

Hello
if you want to continue using the Gerasim server, it would be better to keep applications for Linux and Mac.
thank you

With the help of SerVal I dropped a batch of tasks on the Gerasim server. Currently just for windows cpu. The tasks are for the remainder of the subfield 3 search. Those users that are more interested in sf3 can get tasks from Gerasim - the only caveat is that you get Gerasim credit instead.

I think of this as a trial period, to see how it goes. Numberfields is not going away anytime soon, and Gerasim can run the sf3 tasks in parallel to the sf7 tasks currently running on NF. I will keep this up for as long as Gerasim and/or SerVal allows.

Hi all.
I added an application for nvidia opencl to NumberFields-Gerasim.
Theoretically, everything works, but Gerasim does not send tasks for Nvidia.
This is my second unsuccessful attempt. :(
.
To find out what's going on, I need to run Gerasim under a debugger, and look at the scheduler request / replay .
My suggestion is to count the current set and start investigating after Eric has all the results from the current set.
.
Resume:
The sooner we finish Gerasim's work, the better. :)

Everything is simple. I haven't written any Linux programs yet.
And I have never been able to successfully install a Linux program for Gerasim.
(honestly, there was no need for this).
Regards, SerVal.
p.s: (Windows + CUDA is Ok.) :)

I think the question then becomes the older Macs or the new M1 and M2 cpu's/gpu's? They are very different as Einstein found out thru alot of trial and error.
