Message 2859 - Posted: 12 Jul 2020, 22:13:32 UTC

So the 15x271 batch for subfield 3 is nearing the end. This is a big milestone, as it puts us in the final tier of subfield 3. Good work everyone!

The short term batch plan is to knock out the miscellaneous searches and then finish off some more of the easier batches for subfield 7. This will give me some time to hopefully improve the GPU apps before the final assault on subfield 3.

Thanks all!

Thanks for the update Eric. I along with you am pleased to see the end of this part of subfield 3. All the best with improving the GPU applications. If I can assist like I have done previously please let me know.
Great work everyone getting to this point

I don't know where should I raise this question so I will put it here.

I assume the numbers in the batch status referred to workunits, in the old way. However as you mentioned in other posts, you rearranged the workload somehow to average out the computing time distribution. How should I read the batch status now? Is the number still representing the number of units we need to work on till that batch is done?

Yes, the batch status is still the number of WUs.

Making the WUs more uniform in time was something that was done internal to the WU.

I added the final batches to the miscellaneous table. Once these are finished we will have complete tables of imprimitive decics ramified at {p}, {q}, or {p,q} for all primes p < q < 13, except for the special {2,5} case (which is the purpose of the main searches).

Fantastic work everybody the miscellaneous table is now complete apart from the case mentioned above (2,5) :)

Thanks Speedy!

I also fixed an odd formatting error where the end of the line in the original statement was truncated. Apparently you have to put spaces around the "<" sign.

Our short hiatus in subfield 7 is nearing an end - just waiting on the last chunk of WUs to be returned. Although incomplete, we have unearthed many of the lower discriminant fields for that search.

We have returned to the final search in subfield 3. The intent is to stay with subfield 3 until it is complete.

After an longer break i am kind of back and jeez a lot did change!
Seeing that those 16x270 tasks are estimated to run 1-2 hours only is quite a surprise, too.
Are there still a few long runners out there that took days to complete btw?

Fingers crossed i might get the new PC parts in a few days, ordered an i9-10980XE. Thats a beast and i would love to test it for some sf3 tasks.

Actually, with the improved apps they should average .7 hours on a 3.6GHz single threaded cpu core. No more long runners.

With the current progress made on DS16x270 (sf3) we might be able to complete the remaining majority of the work in just 2,5 weeks.
What will be worked on after that, finishing sf3 or working on DS13x11 in sf7?

The plan is to finish sf3.

For those interested as of 25 Apr 2021, 3:00:01 UTC SF 3 is 25.0% complete with 502.9 days remaining. This will bring us to Saturday, 10 September 2022 have rounded up to the next day. (I forgot to push the post reply button hence why "as of" time doesn't match post time)

I would point out there is a cyclic nature to the estimate as large numbers of hosts (mostly from Science United I think) cycle between projects. The estimate is currently at a peak. The low estimate is less than 300 days.

Thanks for pointing this out in that case it means we will be completed before 19th or 20th of February 2022. It will be nice to see it completed sooner rather than later :)

And now at the current rate, the estimate is 276 days, putting the completion in January of 2022. If only the rate could stay this way (or get faster)...

This would be very helpful for you, let's hope it can happen. I also notice work units in progress are up by around 10,000 this is probably in conjunction with the end date being under 300 days

We are taking a break from subfield 3 and resuming the search over subfield 6.

The main reason for this is we have not found anything new in about 6 months. It's hard to put a percentage on it, but I am 99.99% confident that this search over sf3 is complete. It seems resources would be better spent on a search that will actually find new fields.

We can always finish sf3 at a later time, if for no other reason than to say it is complete with 100% confidence.

In my opinion it is either 100% complete with 100% confidence, or mathematically incomplete. If there actually isn't anything more to discover, that means we set a bound that is too loose, which could be interesting to investigate.

I also want to ask a question. Are there any peer-reviewed publications/grants/awards/anything related to NumberFields@home 2019-2022? If we kept finding nothing, using the resources more wisely can be a great idea.
