I believe our badge system needs an overhaul. I personally am tired of the gemstone theme. Before changing it, I thought it would be best to first get some feedback from the volunteers.

Here are my ideas for the new system:
1. Keep current levels but potentially add some intermediate levels and some higher levels.
2. Use a theme that is more math based. I'm thinking each level could be named after a famous mathematician.
3. Add some additional badges based on number of fields found. There would be a set for decics and a set for septics. We are considering a new app for octics (this would be similar to the septic search except for degree 8) and so there would be a set of badges for that too.

Quite surprised no one has responded in this time.

Personally I agree that the badge system could do with an overhaul. Your suggestions are pretty spot on with what I would value (intermediate and higher levels, new badge images). The math theme would be nice.

Basically thumbs up!

Thanks for the feedback. I was starting to think nobody cared, so why waste the time changing it.

Intermediate levels are a welcome addition: at the moment the steps are very big.

If the steps match those of other projects, it would be nice if the colors of the badges could also match (example: Primegrid).

I'm not sure if matching colors would work, especially if I move to a famous mathematician theme. However, I'm having 2nd thoughts about that theme, as the choice of mathematician seems kind of arbitrary and I wouldn't want to imply one was better than another by the arbitrary ranking.

Whatever scheme I come up with I will post examples here before actually implementing it.

Here is a proposed example badge. There would obviously be different numbers for the other levels, but this gives an idea.

Feedback would be welcome. I will wait at least a week before changing anything, just in case people hate this new system.

I like the idea also, let me read a little more about the project but I do like the "famous mathematician theme" idea but also that should be for the big numbers,
I'll chew on it a day or two and get back to you.....

top notch

I kind of gave up on the famous mathematician theme. I would have to find images that were not copyrighted. However, I've heard horror stories about people being sued even when they used images that google said were not copyrighted and "free to use". I'd rather not deal with the hassle.

HI, just throwing some images out there to see what you like and what fits the projects.
I have done creative all my life and i have found that we have to get in sync to be able to get something that will add value to the community. I don't mind helping

below is just some quick mud....

don't worry about cost, this is mud on the wall to find some cool designs...
I would love to fin a direction but i need to know what you like, i do like the gems, maybe use them for big levels and some cool designs for intermediate or monster milestones.

I am also reading more about what is being done to see if anything like polynomials or something
we can base them on...

dice?

I like the geometric shapes (2nd url). The shapes don't necessarily need to be related to polynomials. The fields and their Galois groups have a certain symmetry associated with them, so the geometric shapes kind of fit in with that, even if there is no direct connection between the symmetries.

In addition to the standard badges based on credit, I was thinking to also have a set of badges based on the number of fields found (1 set for decics and 1 for septics). It would be nice to have a slightly different scheme for each, but not sure exactly how that would be done. The easiest would be to use a single image and add a number to represent the user's current level.

Are you volunteering to help create these badge images? Because it is probably a lot of work.

My very quick attempt to create badges
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AvS39foVfvPOaR5Fv2k1u3Y41cQ?e=WSlaM4

I had in mind different colors for different credits. And either one or two rectangular.
Same would go for decic and septic count.

PS
I added crayon version of projects logo created by my daughter.

Honestly, I hadn't seen this thread prior. I like the idea of more badges and am fine with whatever you come up with. I like the idea of one for finding various fields. Total points is nice but gets boring at times. Glad you are looking into some more after all these years.

Thanks, Eric.

BTW did you hear back from SystemViper about badges?

No, not yet.

I'd like to wait to see what he comes up with. If that doesn't pan out, I could use your daughter's version. The only problem I see there, is we need a badge for each level and the "font" is hand drawn. I wouldn't want to ask her to draw a bunch more, and I'm not good enough at photoshoping to change the hand drawn text.

Here are the proposed credit levels: 10k, 100k, 500k, 1M, 10M, 25M, 50M, 100M, 250M, 500M.

To keep it short: project of new badges proposed by me is dead.
I hope that somebody else will come up with other ideas.

No problem Hal.

At some point I will implement the proposal I made originally. I can always swap the images out with a different set later, if someone comes up with a cool scheme.

I finally got around to upgrading the badge system. Replaced the gemstone theme with a generic Number Fields badge. This also allowed me to add some new levels.

I can always swap out the images with a new theme at a later date if people find this theme too boring.

This involved some small changes to the code, so there's a chance I broke something. Please let me know if you notice anything amiss.
