It has come to my attention that some users have been black listed by the university firewall system. This usually means that the volunteer cant download tasks or even connect to the website.

We are currently looking at ways to reduce the firewall restrictions so this will stop happening. In the meantime, the work around is for me to request the IT department to white list an IP address on an individual basis.

If you or someone you know is experiencing connection problems, please let me know so I can have them added to the white list.

Hello Eric,
Your solution with white list will have effect only with users using fixed Ip. The most of us are in DHCP.
Usually our ISP renew it each 2 or 3 days !
Best regards

That is true. The last user this happened to had a static IP.

The last time they updated the firewall was on July 19th. It looks like your last contact was before that, so you may have a different issue. If you are black listed then your event log will say the connection timed out and that the "project servers appear to be down". Also, as marsinph pointed out, if you have a dynamic IP then the blocking would be temporary.

ALL of Canadian ISP SHAW-dot-CA blocked ... yet US COMCAST is permitted!

Canadian ISPs (non-Uni) that really need to be let thru :

-- Shaw.ca
-- Rogers.ca
-- Videotron.ca (Quebec)
-- Telus.ca (old BC-Tel, ect...)
-- Vergin Mobile Canada (for BOINC @ Android)

Still not unis, but EDU type

-- SELKIRK COLLEGE (BC, Praries)
-- BCIT (BC, a Polytech in NZ Speak or TAFE for OZZIES)

IT would be nice if you could come up with a webpage ::

-- SERVED OUTSIDE YOUR UNI DNS DOMAIN
-- AND NOT IN YOUR UNI DNS DOMAIN EITHER ... that has a built in HTML form structure that provides users their ISP, DOMAIN, IP etc ... to copy into (or already existing in) a form that could be submitted to you to submit to the IT department ...
-- so that said particular user could be added to the exemptions list ...

NOTE
-- your uni IT DEPARTMENT DOES NOT EVEN SEEM TO EXIST AT ALL ... I could find no contact points at all ...
-- your IT DEPARTMENT is really in no way compliant with the standard issue rules that ITU has laid down for contactability per the IT issues that might arise OFF CAMPUS ....

This is a lot to digest. I have forwarded this information to my contact in the Math Department who works with the university IT department.

Message 2546 - Posted: 5 Sep 2019, 16:53:06 UTC - in response to Message 2545.

Here is the response from University IT:

"We've looked into this and the website should be available from anywhere. The only reason that I could think for someone being restricted is if they happen to have an IP with a bad reputation. We have several dynamic lists that check for an IP's reputation and it restricts it if it was seen causing malicious traffic. I can't really make sense of the message about Canadian ISPs, we're not restricting by Geolocation or ISP so who's the ISP and where it's from shouldn't really matter. "

So if anyone is being blocked it means you're on a list of suspected malicious IPs. In the past we've been able to get them to add specific IPs to an exemption list. This will need to be done on a case by case basis. So continue to report if your IP is being blocked.
