It looks like the validator also went crazy at some point, everyone who was reporting tasks during that time was awarded several times their usual daily throughput between 19 Jan 14:00 UTC and 20 Jan 05:00 UTC. I cannot find any tasks with suspiciously high credit (or extremely short run times), so most likely the credit for each task was awarded several times. It has been back to normal since.

The only persistent "problems" I can see right now are PHP warnings on the login page:
Deprecated: urldecode(): Passing null to parameter #1 ($string) of type string is deprecated in /home/boincadm/projects/NumberFields/html/user/login_form.php on line 26
and on the result detail pages (e.g., https://numberfields.asu.edu/NumberFields/result.php?resultid=212105635):
Deprecated: Implicit conversion from float-string "7664.013119" to int loses precision in /home/boincadm/projects/NumberFields/html/inc/util.inc on line 413
Deprecated: Implicit conversion from float-string "7574.109" to int loses precision in /home/boincadm/projects/NumberFields/html/inc/util.inc on line 413
2) Message boards : Number crunching : Discrepancy in the task deadline between server and BOINC manager (Message 2755)

I'm not sure how other projects do this. They either do not have a grace period or they are using a different version of the server that reports things differently.

I've seen a few projects setting a grace period after a longer outage, so that not all tasks that hit the deadline are recycled before the clients get a chance to report them. The only other project I'm aware of that has a grace period all the time is PrimeGrid (25 hours). They went even further and dynamically increase the grace period as long as some progress is reported via trickle-up messages.

I agree with Richard that this is very useful at projects with varying and somewhat unpredictable run times like here. Projects with fixed or at least predictable run times may simply not see that many tasks returned after the deadline. While PrimeGrid has far more predictable run times, their different subprojects for CPU and GPU tend to screw up the run time estimates, creating basically the same problem for the client's work fetch and scheduling algorithms as unpredictable run times.

Kaspersky18@work - could this be a problem?

Looks like it is. Several users complained about upload problems in the last few days and they all used Kaspersky. Apparently, the upload itself works fine (which is why everything looks fine on server side), but the server's confirmation that the file was received is blocked by Kaspersky (so the client thinks it went wrong and tries again). This does not only affect NumberFields@home, but at least one other (and probably all) project that also uses HTTPS for file uploads. HTTP appears to be fine, which is why the problem doesn't occur with Get Decic Fields tasks.

Workarounds:
- disable network traffic scan of BOINC Client in Kaspersky
- set <http_1_0>1</http_1_0> in cc_config.xml to force BOINC to use HTTP 1.0 for file transfers

Less than ten months have passed since the seventh BOINC Pentathlon came to an end. Now the Pentathlon is back to its usual date from May 5 to May 19 and SETI.Germany invites all BOINC teams to compete in five disciplines at five projects for the eighth time.

This year, the stable and popular project World Community Grid is set for the City Run discipline, with only one subproject being considered for the Pentathlon.

The teams may enter their favorite WCG subproject and three additional project suggestions while signing up using the registration form at https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/anmeldung.php until April 27. The suggestions will be taken into account in the project selection as described here. Late registration without project suggestions is possible until May 2.

All information about the BOINC Pentathlon is available at Pentathlon pages, while you can find the answers to many questions in the FAQ.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Pentathlon! :)

My Xeon completed one of the big WUs: wu_Qsqrt421_DS1x8_CV1_S815_N2_-71_N1_-8016to-3292

Progress was very slow at around N1 = -5300, but sped up again and the WU finished well before the deadline. :)
